A Tribute to one of the best animated movies

Studio Ghibli’s “Princess Mononoke” is an incredible movie that has deeply influenced my own work and the way I tell stories. The themes are timeless, and feel all the more pressing in our current age. The characters and world building are unlike anything I have experienced before or after, and their stories have deeply embedded themselves into my mind. Honestly, it was only a matter of time until I would pay homage to one of my most beloved animated movies.

A what if… scenario

With this illustration I didn’t simply want to draw some plain fanart. I wanted to tell a story as well. I wanted to depict a maybe different outcome to the story of “Princess Mononoke”, one more tragic, more painful and yet maybe yet holding a glimmer of hope within. San faces the viewer, defiantly. Her mask is broken, her skin tainted with the curse… and yet the Forest Spirits essence breaks through her cracks. A merging of kindred souls, perhaps? Or a possession, a rebirth through a new body?
I do not have the full answer myself, but isn’t it fun to wonder?
