200th Birthday of A legendary Austrian composer
In 2024 I was approached by Nordico Stadtmuseum Linz to contribute my talent to their grand exhibition in honor of the Austrian composer Anton Bruckner’s 200ths birthday. Together with several other Austrian comic artists, I was tasked with creating a short comic about the composer. The topic was entirely up to our choosing.
The true best friend of man
I chose Anton Bruckner’s well documented and rather unique relationship to Death as my theme for the comic. But during my research I noticed how many treated Bruckner’s affinity as something weird or downright perverse. That struck me as an odd through-line, and I wondered whether it could have anything to do with the distant and even fearful relationship that the modern, western society has developed to Death. So my 15 page short comic explores not only Anton Bruckner’s relationship to Death, but also modern society’s as well as other culture’s. And I try to answer the question if Anton Bruckner’s approach to Death is actually all that perverse or unnatural.
